As specialist forced marriage solicitors we stand up for a person’s right to choose a spouse and enter freely into marriage. We believe that this is central to one’s life and dignity and equality as a human being. We support and advise individuals, both male and female who are subject to the pressures of a forced marriage. Whilst in most cases victims are women, our services apply equally to men facing forced marriage and we believe that men should be given the same assistance and respect when they seek help.

What is forced marriage?

Forced marriage affects people from many communities and cultures. You have the right to choose who you marry, when you marry or if you marry at all. A forced marriage is a marriage in which one or both spouses do not (or, in the case of some adults with learning or physical disabilities, cannot) consent to the marriage and duress is involved. Duress can include physical, psychological, financial, sexual, emotional and psychological pressure (e.g. if you’re made to feel like you’re bringing shame on your family).

Forced Marriage Protection Orders

Parkview Solicitors can help you obtain a Forced Marriage Protection Order form the court. Each order is unique, and is designed to protect you according to your individual circumstances. For example, the court may order someone to hand over your passport or reveal where you are, or to refrain from contacting you or travelling abroad with you. In an emergency, an order can be made to protect you immediately. Disobeying a Forced Marriage Protection Order can result in a sentence of up to 2 years in prison.
