Spouse Visa English Language Requirement Guide
For a first spouse visa, most applicants must pass an approved English test at A1 level in speaking and listening.
Trinity College London is one of the accepted providers.
When extending the visa after 2.5 years, the level usually increases to A2.
For settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain), the requirement normally becomes B1, plus the Life in the UK Test.
Not everyone needs to take the test. Some applicants may be exempt if:
- They are from a majority English-speaking country
- They have a recognised degree taught in English
- They meet certain age or medical exemptions
But exemptions must be proven with proper evidence.
We’ve had clients in Burnley and Manchester who assumed their overseas degree was enough. The Home Office disagreed because it wasn’t confirmed correctly.
Before booking a test, it’s always safer to check.
Parkview Solicitors assists spouse visa applicants across England, including Bolton, Liverpool, Cheshire and Yorkshire, making sure the correct level and evidence are submitted from the start.
We’re based in Bolton (Greater Manchester), but help clients in the North West and throughout the UK.
