Preparing a Witness Statement: A Step-by-Step Guide

A witness statement is a written account of what you know about a situation, written in your own words, and used as evidence in court.

It should be clear, honest, and focused on the facts.

Think about why the statement is needed and what the court is deciding.

Only include information that is relevant to the case.

Start with your full name, address, and your connection to the case. Write in short paragraphs and number them. Use dates and times where possible so events are easy to follow. Explain what happened from start to finish, sticking to facts rather than opinions.

If you are referring to documents, messages, or photos, mention them clearly so they can be checked. Use your own words and everyday language.

Do not exaggerate, guess, or include things you are not sure about. If you do not remember something clearly, it is fine to say so. End with a statement confirming that what you have written is true, then sign and date it.
