ILR English Language Requirement Guide

For most ILR applications, you must meet the English language requirement at B1 level.
This usually means:

  • Passing an approved English test at B1 level or higher, or
  • Having a recognised degree taught in English (with UK ENIC confirmation if required)

In addition, you must pass the Life in the UK Test. This is separate from the English test.

Some applicants are exempt from the English requirement, for example:

  • If you are over a certain age
  • If you have a serious medical condition
  • If you are from a majority English-speaking country

But exemptions must be proven with proper evidence.
We often see confusion in Manchester and Bolton where people assume their old English certificate is enough. The level and validity matter. The same issue comes up across Lancashire, Merseyside, Cheshire and Yorkshire.

At Parkview Solicitors, we check the English and Life in the UK requirements early so there are no last-minute problems.
