How Long Does Divorce Take in the UK? Timeline Explained

The length of time it takes to get divorced in the UK depends on the steps involved, but it is not usually a quick process.

Even in straightforward cases where both sides agree, there are set waiting periods that must be followed.

The process starts when the divorce application is submitted.

After this, there is a waiting period before the next stage can move forward.

Once this first period ends, the court can issue a conditional order, which confirms there is no legal reason the divorce cannot continue. There is then another waiting period before the final stage. The final order legally ends the marriage. These steps mean that, at a minimum, a divorce usually takes several months from start to finish.

The process can take longer if there are disagreements about finances, property, or arrangements for children. Court delays or missing paperwork can also slow things down.

While the divorce itself follows a set timeline, related issues are often dealt with alongside it and may take additional time.
